Just Housing in Europe

The network brings together leading scholars and practitioners from various disciplines to tackle one of Europe’s most pressing challenges: housing justice. Housing is not just a fundamental human need; it shapes our social, economic, and political landscapes. From homelessness to gentrification, and from affordability to ownership models, housing justice impacts the well-being of individuals and the cohesion of communities.

The network promotes interdisciplinary collaboration across philosophy, economics, urban planning, law, sociology, and human geography. Together, members aim to address critical questions:

• What makes a housing system “just”?
• How can housing policies balance equity, affordability, and sustainability?
• What ethical principles should guide decisions on urban development and housing distribution?

Starting in November 2024, the DFG-funded network will produce co-authored publications, develop policy recommendations, and contribute to public debate on housing justice in Europe.
