Call for Applications: Research Assistant Housing Justice Network

The Just Housing in Europe Scientific Network seeks to fill a position for a Research Assistant (wissenschaftliche/r Hilfskraft or Studentische Hilfskraft). The work is remote, and there is no need to be matriculated at the University of Hamburg — any German university will do.

The task consists of assisting in the management of a network of 20 German and international academics working on Housing Justice, including organizing network meetings, maintaining the project website, and conducting literature research. The application document for the network is available here:

Terms and Conditions

  1. The position is for a Research Assistant for approx. 20 hours/month, for at least 1 year, and ideally longer, starting in December 2024 or January 2025. There may be options to extend the position to 40 hours/month.
  2. To be eligible to apply, you need to be enrolled at a German University either as a BA or as an MA student.
  3. All work can be done remotely.
  4. If the successful candidate is a BA student, this will be a position as a “studentische Hilfskraft,” remunerated at 13,25 EUR/h. If the successful candidate is an MA student, this can become a position as a “wissenschaftliche Hilfskraft”, remunerated at 15,21 EUR/h.
  5. The University aims to increase the number of women in research and teaching and explicitly encourages women to apply. Equally qualified female applicants will receive preference in accordance with the Hamburg act on gender equality (Hamburgisches Gleichstellungsgesetz, HmbGleiG).

Responsibilities

The successful applicant will take on the following tasks:

Network Meeting Organization:

    • Coordinate and organize virtual and in-person meetings for the network of 20 academics.
    • Manage logistics, schedules, and communication for these meetings.

    Website Management:

      • Maintain and update the project website using the no-code Google Sites platform (https://sites.google.com).
      • Ensure the website content is current, accurate, and effectively represents the network’s activities.

      Literature Research:

        • Conduct literature reviews on topics related to Housing Justice.
        • Summarize key findings and prepare reports for network members.

        Communication and Collaboration:

          • Liaise effectively between network members, ensuring smooth information flow.
          • Assist in drafting and editing network communications and reports.

          Administrative Support:

            • Provide general administrative support for the network, including document management and scheduling.

            Requirements

            The position is open for applicants from any subject, but a background in social sciences, philosophy, urban studies, or related fields is advantageous.

            The successful candidate will meet the following requirements:

            • Regular availability of approx. 5h/week.
            • Strong organizational and time management skills.
            • Proficiency in using Google Sites or willingness to obtain it, and other digital collaboration tools.
            • Ability to conduct literature searches and summarize academic papers effectively.
            • Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English.
            • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a remote setting.

            Knowledge of German is beneficial but not required. Fluency in English is essential.
